At the Cross Roads of Biology, IT and Big Data-Healthcare gets Personal

Each human is unique in his own ways. For treatments to be effective, it can't be based on what the averages are. "Biotech has progressed to the point where we're actually able to edit or code DNA …," said Andi Karaboutis, Executive VP of Biogen, who was detected with Greaves disease a decade ago and undergoing iodine ablation treatment. The doctors then did some stratification to the normal range to suit her body needs and within three weeks she was back to normal. "Internet of me", the combination of computing power and health research, can lead to treatments being personalized improving the healthcare benefits. Where the Data from IoT Disappears

When it comes to the Internet of Things (IoT), one of the biggest challenges is managing the data created by devices and their flow in and out of the system a developer creates. This data is vital for an efficient system. The initial step is where the data is created and enters the Internet. In the second step, a central system holds on to this data, organizing it constantly. In the third stage old data is sore for future needs. NoSQL platforms like Cassandra are a suitable fit for IoT systems. Distributed database systems like Cassandra have no 'primary' server that controls the rest. Each node in a cluster can handle the incoming transactions. Read at:  http://www.wired.com/2015/03/internet-things-data-go/

Healthcare set to Grow with Big Data

The global healthcare big data market is set to grow at 17 percent compounded annually according to the predictions of ResearchFox Consulting. Predictive and prescriptive analytics shall be the main area of focus in the United States. The Internet of Things (IoT) Industry is likely to get a big push from internet-enabled blood pressure monitors, mHealth apps, and wearable technologies. With the increasing need for interpolation of health data, improved healthcare coordination and robust big data analytics are becoming highly essential. Healthcare is in need of accurate data, real-time insights into patient care, and a better understanding of population health management, big data analytics is expected to gain importance. Smart Grid Infrastructure: An Insight

More than $380 billion will be invested in IoT between now and 2025 is predicted. Ben Gardner, President, Northeast Group says, "Smart meters with two-way communications and other sensors across the power grid are already providing tangible benefits for utility customers. The next decade will see billions invested in the global smart grid market, creating a huge opportunity for vendors." Partnership, mergers and acquisition activity is also accelerating. Infrastructure investment is moving out of developed markets to take advantage of opportunities in emerging global markets. Vendors are branching out from traditional investment and exploring the potential of new smart city and smart infrastructure market segments. They are rethinking of their business models; moving away from hardware development into analytics software and services. Public Transport Improved By Big Data And IoT

Transport for London (TfL) data, collected through ticketing systems, censored vehicles, traffic signals, survey groups etc. is provided through open API's for 3rd party app developers. This data is then used to produce maps showing when and where people are traveling, and allowing analysis at the level of individual journeys by using Big Data. The key priority to initiate this data was to provide travel information which gives the routes customers use and to send travel updates to them. Thus Bernard Marr from Forbes in his article showed how big data played a big part in re-energizing London's transport network. IoT + Azure: Try the Magic!

IoT has been present since long. But, recently this concept has achieved infinite fame with its easy to use nature and its feature of simplifying the complex devices. With IoT’s horizon widening and Microsoft being the Cloud software giant, with its program called, Azure, there are humongous possibilities of getting the benefits of both by combining their usage.

Kevin Miller, Microsoft’s Principal Program Manager for Azure IoT, has shared best practices for creating IoT solutions with Azure. They are:

  • Think big. Start small
  • Telemetry First
  • Stream Analytics
  • Don’t interrupt the fast path
  • Defense in depth

Follow these guidelines and try the magic that this synergy provides.

Healthcare Big Data Analytics: An Insight

Big data analytics is the joining of two or more sources of information, so that it can be comprehended from the comparison of the new, expanded data set. Success with healthcare big data analytics relies on vendors, team of experts, and people who understands health management. Collecting and leveraging patient-generated health data from IoT devices will be the key in health care analytics. To know more how IoT helps in healthcare big data analytics, read this interesting article by Jennifer Bresnick (author) at: http://healthitanalytics.com/news/why-healthcare-big-data-analytics-needs-the-internet-of-things

Smart Cities: A Reality With Big Data & Internet of Things

We have come across the word "Smart city" frequently in recent times and we will see it more frequently in coming years. What exactly is a Smart City and how is it created?  The idea of smart City is to embed the technologically advanced devices which are making the Internet of things a reality into our surroundings. Once the technology is hard wired with the infrastructure, we can interact with these devices using our smart phones or computers and also devices can interact among themselves. For example, a car will be guided to an empty parking space without any human intervention.

In order to realize these smart cities, software and hardware applications for the internet of things are being encouraged. Some of the applications planned for smart cities are intelligent street lighting systems to conserve energy, mapping energy use around the city to understand demand and mapping how people maximize use of bicycle and foot paths. People are also raising caution over this new technology as it will hurt privacy.Read more at:http://www.forbes.com/sites/bernardmarr/2015/05/19/how-big-data-and-the-internet-of-things-create-smarter-cities/2/
